Summary

Sir Digby Kirtling, self-made millionaire and would-be member of the landed gentry, has renovated a crumbling manor house in Gloucestershire. He has grand plans for the place, employing an interior designer and commissioning a copy of an impressionist painting - replacing the principal figures in the original with himself and his employees. A party is thrown for the unveiling - but celebration soon turns to tragedy when his estate manager Una May, is found dead on the grounds, strangled with her own necklace. Sir Digby becomes the prime suspect when a post-mortem reveals that Una was pregnant with his child.
