Summary

This collection explores the controversial and perhaps even abject idea that evils, large and small, human and natural, may have a central positive function to play in our lives. For centuries a concern of religious thinkers from the Christian tradition, very little systematic work has been done to explore this idea from the secular point of view.

Author Biography

PEDRO ALEXIS TABENSKY lectures in philosophy at Rhodes University in South Africa. He is the author of Happiness: Personhood, Community, Purpose (2003) and of several publications in peer reviewed journals. Tabensky is also the editor of Judging and Understanding: Essays on Free Will, Narrative, Meaning and the Ethical Limits of Condemnation (2006). He is currently working on two monographs: one on the issues explored in the present collection and another defending a new position in the free will debate, which, alluding to Peter Strawsons distinction between optimism and pessimism, he terms radical optimism.
