Summary

In this final installment of Karl Kerenyi's tetralogy examining ancient Greek gods and heroes and their myths and cults, the tragic figure of Prometheus comes under the microscope. Through an analysis of ancient Greek depictions of Prometheus as well as an exploration of his portrayal in Romantic poetryincluding that of Goethethe author posits that Prometheus is an archetypal image of human existence, embodying as he does the transformation of suffering into the mystery of sacrifice, and seeks to discover how this primitive story was invested with a universal fate.
