Summary

Now in paperback! Follow the story. Live the experience. One man's photographic journey through the rainforests of the world. This popular reference is 16+ years in the making, packed with spectacular photographs from Thomas Marent, a self-taught photographer who has dedicated half his life to capturing images of rainforest life. Travel across 5 continents for an up-close view of the astonishing variety and fascinating behaviour of rainforest plants and trees, reptiles, birds, amphibians, insects, and mammals. Rainforests are the most complex, productive, dynamic and diverse places on Earth, yet more is known about our Universe than the estimated 10 million plant and animal species that teem inside these great hothouses of life. DK's Rainforest provides a glimpse inside these mysterious realms with a selection of photographs by nature photographer Thomas Marent, whose amazing eye for detail, colour, and light bring the beauty and majesty of the rainforest vividly to life on every page. The expertly written text narrative, captions, and the stories behind the photographs is as creative and informative as the images. Rainforest is arranged thematically into six sections that explore and explain all aspects of life in the rainforest and the ways in which different life forms attack, defend, reproduce, communicate, and live together. Contents PRELIMS (15PP) FOREWORD BY THE RAINFOREST FOUNDATION (2PP) A PHOTOGRAPHER'S PASSION (6PP) SECTION 1: PANORAMA (52PP) The book opens with a stunning visual panorama of the rainforest environment from floor to canopy, giving a feel for the expanse, density, colours, and textures of the world's rainforests. SECTION 2: DIVERSITY (46PP) Rainforests are home to a greater variety of life than anywhere else on Earth, with millions of different species of butterfly, moth, bee, wasp, cricket, beetle and ant in the canopy alone. This glorious photo gallery provides a vivid snapshot of the beauty and variety of plant and animal life found in world's rainforests. SECTION 3: SURVIVAL (116PP) Rainforests are flooded with sunlight, deluged with rain and packed with nutrients, yet they are so crowded with life that every organism, from the smallest insect to the largest tree, must fight a ceaseless battle to get the resources it needs to survive. Divided into three sub-sections, this chapter reveals the amazingly sophisticated adaptations that plants and trees employ to reach the light, and which animals, birds and insects use to obtain food, housing and protection. The sub-sections are as follows: PREDATOR (38PP) ARMS & ARMOUR (36PP) DECEPTION (38PP) SECTION 4: CYCLES (70PP) Low light and the sheer density of growth means that you can seldom see further than a few meters across the forest floor or through the tree branches. The myriad different life forms in the rainforest must contact other members of their own kind if they are to breed and pass on their genes. Communication is the answer, and the three sub-section in this chapter display the ingenious ways in which plants and wildlife use color and pattern, ornament, scent, and sound to attract pollinators, disbursers, and mates: FLOWER TO FRUIT (18PP) LIFELINES (30PP) RECYCLERS (17PP) SECTION 5: SOCIETY (40PP) For many rainforest organisms, survival is impossible without pooling skills, whether with other members of their own species or with a different species altogether. This section looks at animal pairings and groups, and the ways in which different rainforest species co-operate with one another to ensure their survival. SECTION 6: RAINFORESTS OF THE WORLD (12PP) A continent-by-continent overview of rainforest locations across the globe, the life they support, and their biological value. INDEX & ACKNOWLEDGMENTS (2PP)
