Roots Jam 3 offers drummers, dance teachers and choreographers a unique resource of authentic West African drum rhythms. Included are complete arrangements for 16 popular dances, with parts for dununs and djembe accompaniment, as well as djembe solos. This collection is supplemented by 27 original compositions by Nowick Gray, and by workshops in timing and technique, bell patterns, and soloing.
Nowick Gray has been drumming since 1990, studying along the way with such masters as Babatunde Olatunji, Alpha Yaya Diallo, Mamady Keita, Famoudou Konate, and Moussa Traore. Nowick has organized drum events ranging from all-night jams and trance dances to a world drum fusion clinic. He has collected hundreds of African, Afro-Latin, and Middle Eastern rhythms in book form, setting new standards for notating and compiling such material. He has studied drumming in Guinea, West Africa, and has performed and taught in such diverse locations as Thailand, India and Tasmania. Nowick is currently based in Victoria, BC, Canada, where he drums and arranges rhythms for African dance classes, teaches drumming, and performs with local percussion groups.
