Summary

•Featuring over 200 color photographs and minute architectural drawings, this book recreates the splendor of Lucknow's historic monuments•A must-have for anyone with an interest in Indian architecture, or the history of this resplendent cityLucknow was a city of dreams, once. Now, 160 years after the elegant court of Nawab Wajid Ali Shah, there are almost as many different ways of interpreting it as there were dreamers in its Golden Age. Its splendid brick buildings have witnessed centuries of history, the chime of temple bells, the call of the muezzin, the magical strains of thumri, the soulful lyrics of ghazals, the expressive grace of Kathak, the exquisite crafts, and the delicate scents and flavors of local cuisine. All are intrinsic parts of Lucknow, which has become one of India's many metropolises and an important cultural hub. The famed nazaakat and nafaasat go hand-in-hand with the marvelous Indo-Sarcenic style buildings. This book takes us on a journey through a bygone era, exploring the passions and aesthetics of the people of Awadh.
