Summary

Ideal for advanced undergraduate and first-year graduate courses in analog filter design and signal processing, Design of Analog Filters integrates theory and practice in order to provide a modern and practical "how-to" approach to design. A complete revision of Mac E. Van Valkenburg's classicwork, Analog Filter Design (1982), this text builds on the presentation and style of its predecessor, updating it to meet the needs of today's engineering students and practicing engineers. Reflecting recent developments in the field and emphasizing intuitive understanding, it provides students withan up-to-date introduction and design guidelines and also helps them to develop a "feel" for analog circuit behavior.Design of Analog Filters, Second Edition, moves beyond the elementary treatment of active filters built with opamps. The book discusses fundamental concepts; opamps; first- and second-order filters; second-order filters with arbitrary transmission zeros; filters with maximally flat magnitude, withequal ripple (Chebyshev) magnitude, and with inverse Chebyshev and Cauer response functions; frequency transformation; cascade designs; delay filters and delay equalization; sensitivity; LC ladder filters; ladder simulations by element replacement and by operational simulation; in addition,high-frequency filters based on transconductance-C concepts and on designs using spiral inductors are covered; as are switched-capacitor filters, and noise issues.

Author Biography

Rolf Schaumann received the Diplom-Ingenieur degree from the University of Stuttgart, Germany, in 1967 and the Ph.D. degree from the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, in 1970. He was on the faculty of the Department of Electrical Engineering of the University of Minnesota from 1970 until 1988. In 1989, he was appointed Professor and Chairman of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Portland State University, Portland, Oregon, a position he held until 1999, and where he is now Professor Emeritus. His research interests are in circuits and systems, analog integrated circuits and filters. He authored or co-authored some 150 publications and 10 invited chapters. He was co-editor of Modern Active Filter Design, IEEE Press, 1981, and is co-author of Analog Filters: Passive LC, Active RC and Switched Capacitor, Prentice-Hall, 1990, and Design of Analog Filters, Oxford University Press, 2001. Dr. Schaumann was an Associate Editor and the Editor-in-Chief of the IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems (CAS). He served on the Board of Governors of the CAS Society, was CAS Vice President for Publications in 1988/9, and in 1990 was President of the CAS Society. He received the Golden Jubilee Medal from the CAS Society and the Millennium Medal from the IEEE. He is a Life Fellow of the IEEE.
Haiqiao Xiao received Ph.D from Portland State University in 2008, Dr. Eng. from Peking University in 1999, M.S. and B.S. from Northern Jiaotong University in 1995 and 1992, respectively. He has been working for Cypress Semiconductors and Teradyne Inc. for more than 4 years in the area of RF and high-speed analog circuit design. Previously he has been working for Beijing Open Lab (BOL), Inc. and Nohau Corp. from 1995 to 2000 in embedded systems. His research interests include analog/RF circuits for wired and wireless communications, high-frequency active filters and oscillators. He has 4 patents and 13 publications.
