Summary

Sentences, Paragraphs, and Beyond with Integrated Readingsis the beginner level of Lee Brandon's two-level text series that also includesParagraphs and Essays. In this text, Brandon provides a review of sentence-level grammar and mechanics, as well as in-depth instruction in the writing process and patterns of writing. Brandon's friendly, informal tone and offbeat readings speak to students and encourage them to persevere in the writing process and become strong writers. Exercises as well as readings are integrated throughout every chapter of the text. In this edition, intriguing photos encourage student analysis, either individually or in groups, and serve as writing prompts; new "Mindset" features before some readings also stimulate critical thinking about the readings. A new chapter (Chapter 13) provides special ESL tips and pointers. Comprehensive coverage of basics teaches beginning writers how to write strong sentences and paragraphs that are both grammatically correct and well developed. Teaches a three-stage writing process. Stage one covers exploring, experimenting, and gathering information; stage two focuses on writing the controlling idea and organizing and developing support; and stage three explains writing, revising, and editing. Engaging writing samples of topics from "cupid at the workplace" to heroes to Chinese and American cultural differences. Every rhetorical mode chapter provides a number of writing samples, including a variety of student samples that reinforce principles and provide achievable models. The text's pedagogy includes numerous exercises that reinforce chapter concepts and thorough Chapter Review Exercises. New to this edition are "Microthemes" that provide warm-up writing exercises at the beginning of most chapters, and analytical exercises based on photographs in the writing chapters. Also new to this edition are special features that point students to the Online Study Center, where they find additional self-study practice exercises that provide immediate feedback.
