Summary

What are Shakespeare's uses of the conceptual space of conflict? And what has been the role played by principles, patterns and situations of conflict in the construction of the Shakespeare myth, and in its European and then global spread? This collection looks, from a truly pan-European vantage point, at the variety of conflictive and conflicting dimensions embedded in Shakespeare's texts (Part I); at the way Shakespeare's universe of discourse has been enlisted to address and dramatize conflicts of a socio-political, cultural or aesthetic nature (Part II); and at how Shakespearean meanings have been renegotiated through reception and reproduction in actual historical contexts of strife or outright belligerence (Part III). The fascinatingly complex picture that emerges from the original studies gathered here provides new insight into Shakespeare's unique position in world literature and culture.

Author Biography

CARLA DENTE is a professor of English Literature and Drama and Head of the Department of English at the University of Pisa, Italy. She is on the board of the International Shakespeare Association (ISA) and is co-Founder and President of the Italian Association of Shakespearean and Early Modern Studies (IASEMS). She has published on contemporary theatre and on Shakespeare and has recently edited Dibattito sul teatro. Voci opinioni interpretazioni, (2006) and co-edited Conflict Zones: Actions Languages Mediations (with Sara Soncini, Edizioniets, 2004), Proteus. The Language of Metamorphosis (Ashgate, 2005), and a hypertext: 'Hamlet' Promptbooks of the Nineteenth Century (2002).

SARA SONCINI is a lecturer and researcher in the Department of English Literature at the University of Pisa, Italy. She has co-edited Shakespeare Graffiti: Il cigno di Avon nella cultura di massa (2002), Conflict Zones: Actions Languages Mediations (with Carla Dente, Edizioniets, 2004) and, more recently, Crossing Time and Space: Shakespeare Translations in Present-Day Europe (2008). Her publications also include articles on Shakespeare in 20th century film and performance, with a specific focus on the problematics of stage and screen translation, and the representation of post-modern warfare through Shakespeare production. She is a board member of the European Shakespeare Research Association (ESRA) and the Italian Association of Shakespearean and Early Modern Studies (IASEMS).
