Summary

Situational crime prevention (SCP) has been widely used to reduce criminal opportunities and thereby reduce crime. Most applications of situational crime prevention have involved traditional crimes of theft and violence occurring in the towns and cities of the developed world. This book breaks new ground and examines how SCP can be used to diminish opportunities for a set of very different crimes, the poaching and illegal killing of protected animals, taking place in remote areas of developing countries. This book examines current levels of poaching for different species and settings and illustrates a variety of approaches in collecting and analyzing data. In suggesting various preventive interventions and discussing possible ways to make poaching prevention profitable for local communities and national parks, this book provides an innovative contribution for both criminology and wildlife conservation.
