For this year's adventure I took my 12-year-old twin granddaughters to Baraloche, the ski capital of Argentina. We stayed in a remote mountain cabin 5,000 feet up in the snow-covered Andes Mountains, sleeping in the unheated loft where the nighttime temperatures dropped to freezing. The snow base measured 12 inches upon arrival and it snowed a few inches more each day. For 10 days the three of us cross-country skied the powdery Andes trails, snowshoed the snowy heights and downhill skied at Mount Cathedral. While skiing or hiking through the Andes we encountered red fox, carancho eagles, condors, giant redheaded Magellanic woodpecker and bushy red squirrels. What did we like best about the adventure? ?I liked the cross-country skiing and talking to the Spanish-speaking staff, ? Emily said. ?I thought the downhill skiing was awesome!? Jessica said ?I have a million wonderful memories of spending two weeks with the granddaughters, ? I said.
