Summary

The two salient features of the global economy are the current world-wide recession induced by the recent financial crisis, and the emergence of major economic powers from within the developing world such as China, India and Brazil. A great deal has been said about the global financial crisis in terms of regulatory failure, but less attention has been focused on the macroeconomic imbalances that produced the current crisis. As world trade shrinks, and the multilateral trading system under the aegis of the WTO is increasingly being by-passed by bilateral and regional trading arrangements, the effects of economic diplomacy in fostering trade will become increasingly more important. Even before the present economic crisis began growth in South-South (inter-developing country) trade and South-South foreign direct investment (FDI) was outpacing growth in world trade. This volume will bring together contributions from key researchers, including Rolph van der Hoeven, Rob Vos, Kunibert Raffer, Karel Jansen and Peter Bergeijk, to address the unified theme of South-South economic cooperation and interaction in a recession affected globalized and interdependent world.
