Summary

The contribution of tourism to climate change and the likely effects of climate change on some key tourist destinations have been well reported and discussed. Yet as the World Travel and Tourism Council has recently highlighted, there is a lack of evidence-based systematic practical advice as to how the tourism industry should respond. This book addresses the gap between our increasing understanding of the drivers and consequences of climate change on the one hand, and very specific practical advice for mitigation and adaptation on the other hand. The book therefore positions itself between the rapidly growing volume of literature presenting higher-level assessments of climate change and the implications for tourism, and the guides that are often produced by industry organisations and typically have a very specific focus. The authors acknowledge the importance of a sound conceptual understanding of climate change and how the tourism sector might best respond, but focus on the roles of supportive policies and institutions in ensuring a strong "enabling environment" for practical responses, and on the practical responses themselves. The latter are presented in the form of critically assessed case studies, including illustrative examples from places such as the Caribbean, Spain, the Maldives, Nepal, UK, Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific. These support an overall framework providing a methodology for translating adaptation and mitigation policies into practice.
