Summary

The University of Mississippi was established in the town of Oxford in 1848 so that the citizenry would have an alternative to sending Mississippi's young male gentry to the North or to England for collegiate education. The university's history has been linked to key events in the growth of the American nation and the national conscience. In the late 1850s, under the leadership of Chancellor Frederick A. P. Barnard, the university assembled perhaps the finest collection of scientific equipment in antebellum America. In 1861, when only thirteen years old and still struggling to win financial and popular support, the university closed as its students withdrew to enlist in the Confederate military service at the beginning of the Civil War. The University Greys, a company of students enrolled as Company A, 11th Mississippi Infantry, won "imperishable glory" in the Battle of Gettysburg. The institution reopened in 1865 after the war ended.Since 1897 the University of Mississippi has been known fondly as Ole Miss, a name derived from Ole Miss, the college yearbook. In the dosing decades of the nineteenth century and the first two of the twentieth century, the university evolved from a small liberal arts college with a prescribed classical curriculum into a university with a broader elective curriculum. But the development of professional schools notwithstanding, it retained many of the traditions and characteristics of the liberal arts college. In the late 1920s, after an unsuccessful attempt to move the university from Oxford to the more liberal state capital Jackson, Governor Theodore G. Bilbo dismissed the chancellor and several members of the faculty.During the civil rightsstruggle Ole Miss became a battleground when the federal government sent military troops to enforce the court order to admit James Meredith, a black student. In a resulting riot on September 30, 1962, there were two fatalities
