Author Biography

Terry Porter found his love for the game of basketball during high school in Mandan, North Dakota from 1970–1974.

One of the highlights of his career was upsetting then #1 Dickinson Trinity in the Western Dakota Association Tournament 75-57. The game ended up being voted the "Upset of the Year" by the North Dakota Sportscasters and Sportswriters in 1975.

Porter continued his basketball career at then Mary College (now University of Mary) in Bismarck, North Dakota for legendary coach Al Bortke. His college team compiled a 90-24 record from 1974–1978. His junior and senior year had a record of 48-10, with a school record 26–0 home record at home. He returned to his alma mater in 1980 as an assistant coach and helped the team to a 147–55 record during that span, including a 30–3 season record and a trip to the 1982 NAIA National Tournament as District 12 Champions. He was inducted into the Marauder Hall of Fame, once as a player and once as an assistant coach.

From 1986–1997, Porter was the head coach at Lake Region State College in Devils Lake, North Dakota. He finished second on the all-time wins list with a career record of 173–168, including four Mon-Dak Conference Championships and one State Championship. Another career highlight was coaching the nation's leading scorer, Dan Schilz, who also led the NJCAA with a 35 PPG average.

Porter continued his coaching career at Fargo North, Concordia College (men), Fargo Davies, and Concordia College (women), along with coaching AAU during the summer with NDPRO in Fargo.
When not coaching basketball, he developed a practice planner, "Championship Basketball Planning," for high school and college basketball coaches.
