His dog Anna was raised by Canine Companions for Independence, a non-profit organization that enhances the lives of people with disabilities by providing assistance dogs. The Koontz family later adopted Anna, and 100% of what Dean receives from the sale of Ask Anna will be donated to CCI. Anna, Dean and his wife Gerda live in Southern California.
