Summary

This book is for all of us who care for and about others. It's about being compassionate toward oneself so that you can continue to be compassionate toward others. As a nurse, teacher, mother, wife, and sister, I highly recommend this delightful and therapeutic book. Get your pen in hand; you'll be underlining whole sections that sound just like you. Author Biography

Dr. Robert Wicks, who received his doctorate in Psychology from Hahnemann Medical College and Hospital, is a professor at Loyola College in Maryland. He has taught in universities and professional schools of psychology, medicine, social work, nursing and theology and in the past several years he has spoken on his two major areas of expertise: the prevention of secondary stress (the pressures encountered in reaching out to others) and the integration of psychology and spirituality from a world religion perspective. He has also addressed 10,000 educators in the Air Canada Arena in Toronto, spoken at the FBI Academy, led a weeklong course in Paris and addressed care givers in Hanoi, Vietnam. In 1994, he was responsible for the psychological debriefing of relief workers evacuated from Rwanda during their bloody civil war. In 1993, and again in 2001, he worked in Cambodia with professionals from the English-speaking community who were present to help the Khmer people rebuild their nation following years of terror and torture. In 2006, he delivered a presentation on self-care at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda Maryland and Walter Reed Army Hospital to those health care professionals responsible for Iraqi war veterans evacuated to the U. S. with multiple amputations and severe head injuries.

Dr. Wicks is author of numerous books including The Resilient Clinician and Overcoming Secondary Stress in Medical and Nursing Practice (both from Oxford University Press) and the acclaimed best seller, Riding the Dragon: 10 Lessons for Inner Strength in Challenging Times (Sorin Books, 2003).
