This is the first book to capture the amazing diversity of architecture, design, and arts and crafts in Burma. Ranging from the monumental pagodas of Bagan to the architectural heritage of contemporary Rangoon (Yangon), both religious and secular buildings are presented in rich detail. Archaeological experts highlight the major influences and styles, while sections on Burma's rich tradition of arts and crafts provide a wealth of information. Buddha images, lacquerware, paintings, ceramics, woodcarvings, bronzes, textiles, costumes, and much more, are illustrated with countless examples of exquisite objets d'art. Chapters on Burmese history and culture emphasize the all-encompassing relationship between everyday life and Buddhist spiritual tradition.
