Summary

This highly clinical book looks at difficult and controversial topics in the area of paediatric and adolescent gynecology. Following on from Volume I which details common problems, Professor Alvin Goldfarb has once again assembled a team of contributors from the North American Society ofPediatric and Adolescent Gynecology with particular expertise in managing clinical problems in these areas of special interest. The book begins by looking at the unusual problems of prepubertal vulvovaginitis and bleeding in a carefully structured and readable fashion. This is followed by a seriesof chapters which deal with the problems of adolescent pregnancies, including behavioural analysis and psychological assessment, and the reproductive consequences of childhood malignancy. The final section covers general gynecological problems, including abdominal pain, breast disease, management ofabnormal cervical smears, surgical challenges and the female athletic triad. The chapters can be read through in series, or taken individually as concise current reviews of a particular topic. By reading this book, the practising gynecologist will be reminded of the distinct differences between anadult patient and the pediatric or adolescent patient , and will be encouraged to be sympathetic to the special needs, both physical and psychological, of this latter group.
