Summary

This collection of short stories situated in Prague in the 16th century talks about the Rudolph II, king of Bohemia and emperor of the Holy Roman Empire, and an arts lover. He is accompanied in the book by the Rabbi Loew, the wealthy Mordejai Meisl, and his wife. The receiver of these short stories is Jacob Meisl, the narrator, a mysterious medical student who’s willing to prove that “history school professors and history books writers don’t know nor understand anything” because they usually forget about the human and magical aspect of our existence.

Author Biography

Leo Perutz studied mathematics and worked in an insurance company in Wien and in Trieste before becoming a full-time writer. He was one of the most popular European authors of the twenties and thirties.
