Summary

Decentralization is changing the face of South East Europe. This book provides practical analysis of the devolutionary measures reshaping post-Communist economies. Decentralization of government to regional and local levels, in both is administrative and fiscal forms, has taken place to different extents in the countries of South East Europe and this book discusses the many factors and three main forms that make this so. Going through Europe's history, looking at religion and economical growth and understanding the politics of a nation under a Communist regime, this book analyses the extent and evolution of the decentralization and local development in South East Europe in the 1900s.

Author Biography

DR WILL BARTLETT is a senior research fellow at the London School of Economics and an Honorary Professor at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. His research focusse on issues of decentralisation, health system reforms, and the political economy of South East Europe.

DR SANJA MALEKOVIC is a senior research fellow in the Institute for International Relations, Zagreb, Croatia. She has been lecturer on the postgraduate course on European Studies at the University of Padua (EU Cohesion Policy) and is currently lecturer at the postgraduate Course on EU Economics at the Faculty of Economics in Zagreb as well as Business Academy Expert on the subject of EC Cohesion Policy. She has been engaged as expert on a number of projects supported by the EC, UNDP, World Bank, ILO and Croatian central and regional government institutions related to regional development and policy as well as evaluation of development programmes. DR VASSILIS MONASTIRIOTIS is a senior lecturer in the Political Economy of South Eastern Europe at the European Institute at the London School of Economics, UK. Before joining the European Institute in 2004 he was Lecturer in the Department of Economics at Royal Holloway, University of London. He has previously worked as Research Fellow at the London School of Economics and the University of Reading and as a Course Lecturer in the Department of Geography at LSE.
