Summary

DocMJ: The Business of Compassionate Cannabis Care is a firsthand account written by Aaron Bloom, tracing his journey from healthcare attorney and senior care executive to CEO of one of Florida's leading medical cannabis practices.

Aaron shares how years in traditional healthcare revealed a painful truth: too many patients, especially the elderly, were suffering without relief. Motivated by a desire to deliver care that prioritized dignity and comfort, he stepped into the emerging world of medical cannabis.

The book explores the evolution of the medical marijuana industry and the complex intersection of business, law, and compassionate care. It sheds light on the deeply personal reasons patients seek cannabis—chronic pain, PTSD, anxiety, insomnia, and treatment-resistant conditions. Many have tried everything else, only to find real relief through medical cannabis.

Aaron also delves into the legal and regulatory challenges that shape the industry. From navigating conflicting state and federal laws to confronting the unintended consequences of recreational cannabis legalization, he reveals the operational risks and policy contradictions that complicate access and perception.

What makes this story most powerful is the patients. One mother, for instance, fought for access to a THC product that had reduced her daughter's seizures when every other treatment had failed. Stories like these reflect the profound and sometimes life-changing role cannabis plays in modern medicine.

This book is both a business memoir and a call to action. It urges greater public understanding, expanded clinical research, and forward-thinking policy reform to unlock the full potential of medical cannabis. Whether you're a policymaker, patient, entrepreneur, or healthcare professional, DocMJ offers a compelling case for why compassionate cannabis care matters—now more than ever.

Author Biography

Aaron Bloom never set out to become the CEO of a medical cannabis company. In fact, for most of his life, he bought into the stereotypes surrounding cannabis as the "drug choice of slackers." His views began to change when he was a young prosecutor working for the Nassau County District Attorney's Office in Long Island, New York, after he graduated from the University of Pittsburgh's School of Law. During that time, he grew somewhat disenchanted with the criminal justice system and decided to leave courtroom law in favor of using the law to make a difference in people's lives.
In this pursuit, he returned to his home state of Florida and worked his way to become the general counsel of a national senior housing organization, overseeing all legal matters. When medical marijuana was legalized in Florida, a physician approached Aaron about the company he founded—DocMJ—and wanted counsel to ensure the company's practices aligned with the state's regulatory requirements. Still skeptical about cannabis, Aaron agreed out of curiosity and because of the physician's reputation for patient care. As he spent time with DocMJ's staff, physicians, and patients, he made the remarkable discovery that much of what he assumed about medical marijuana was wrong. Rather, Aaron saw how cannabis was providing immense benefits to a wide array of patients. As he became more enmeshed in the business, he was troubled by how the bureaucratic red tape often hindered the potential good for patients. Aaron quickly became a partner in DocMJ and moved into the CEO's chair, fully committed to the mission.
Since then, he has worked tirelessly to educate people about the compassionate care available through medical cannabis. Since 2021, he has served as the chairman of the political advocacy group Floridians for Safe Cannabis Care, which educates policymakers about the benefits of medical marijuana. Time after time, Aaron has been approached for his unique perspective that sits at the intersection of the law, business, healthcare, and patient well-being. Due to the ever-shifting legal landscape, few resources exist to help people understand the business side of the industry, and Aaron realized that the story of DocMJ provided the perfect case study.
