Excerpts

At the end of the nineteenth century, as steamships were replacing schooners and sailing vessels of all kinds, Down East Maine hung onto their heritage longer than other parts of the country and New England. This book will tell the story of the schooners, with an emphasis on the early history: the importance of sailing to the region, the region's efforts to prolong their sailing heritage, the captains and people who worked on the ships, and today's efforts to revive and preserve it.
