Octubre, 1961. Un avión repleto de mujeres despega de Madrid con destino a Australia. Ciento catorce almas, equipadas con sus sueños y temores, se dirigen al n del mundo.
UN VIAJE AL PAÍS DEL ATARDECER DORADO
Entre los verdes campos de caña de azúcar de Queensland y el dorado del cielo australiano, se alza la plantación Santa Ana. Elisa, una joven asturiana integrante de una iniciativa del franquismo y la iglesia católica para poblar Australia llamada Operación Marta, consigue trabajo en la hacienda, aunque ella tiene otro objetivo: encontrar al padre de su hijo, desaparecido tiempo atrás.
UN AMOR IMPOSIBLE DE OLVIDAR
Sin embargo, cuanto más investiga, más misterios descubre alrededor de la plantación, de sus patronos y de los duros trabajos de los jornaleros. Bajo la amenazante mirada del sacerdote y el guardián de Santa Ana, Elisa buscará la verdad y hallará la sabia y valiente compañía de los aborígenes del lugar y de aquellos que, como ella, han perdido demasiado para temerle a nada.

A JOURNEY TO THE LAND OF GOLDEN SUNSETS
Between the green sugarcane fields of Queensland and the golden Antipodean sky rises the plantation of Santa Ana. Elisa, a young woman from Asturias and one of the plane’s passengers, finds work there. Ostensibly in the country as part of Operation Marta, a project of the Franco Regime and the Church to populate Australia with young Catholic families, she has a different mission: to find the long-lost father of her son.
AN UNFORGETTABLE LOVE
The more she investigates, however, the more mysteries Elisa discovers about the plantation, her employers and fellow laborers. Under the stern eye of Santa Ana’s priest and overseer, she searches for the truth, aided by the local Aboriginal population and others who, like her, have already lost too much to be afraid.

Operation Marta, also known as “the brides’ flight,” was a real program that brought hundreds of women to Australia with the promise of a better future in the early 1960s. Celia Santos reveals the dark secret behind that promise in a story of love, hope and hardship peopled by a cast of memorable characters.
