Summary

Tracing some of the novel political geographies and geographical imaginations emergent within - and made possible by - the EU's actions in the international arena, this book offers a novel contribution to the debate on European geopolitics. The ten empirical chapters that make up this collection provide a critical geopolitical reading of the ways in which countries (and entire regions) are brought into the EU's 'orbit' by which they are, to one extent or another, 'Europeanised'. They look to the ways in which the spaces of European power and 'actor-ness' are narrated and created, in both formal policy documents and in popular geographies - but also how Europe's discursive (and material) strategies of incorporation are appropriated and transformed by regional elites, from the southern shores of the Mediterranean to Latin America.
