Summary

Reading this book is like having a cool older sister holding your hand through every curve that puberty throws your way. Funny, frank, and fully illustrated, it covers all of the physical, emotional and social changes going on inside and out.

Puberty is a time of tremendous change. Bodies grow up and out, moods swing, socializing takes on a whole new look and feel. It can be intimidating and awesome, overwhelming and  liberating.

The authors break down the science and share a slew of insightful, funny personal tales, showing and telling girls what to expect as their hormones rage and their bodies change. In addition to reviewing physical changes, the book does a deep dive into emotional development from early sexual feelings to anger and anxiety. Recognizing puberty as a time of transition in terms of a young woman's place in the world, the authors also explore friendship, social media, body image, identity, peer pressure, and other important, contemporary issues. A diverse range of experiences and viewpoints from an extensive circle of sisters, friends, and others is lavishly, hilariously illustrated by Amelia Pinney.
No-holds-barred, and packed with useful information, this is a must-read for curious middle school girls.

Author Biography

Born and raised in Queens, New York City as a middle child of 5, Andrea has always been fulfilled by nurturing connections with those around her. She finds the most joy in creating platforms that facilitate storytelling while building community. Much of her inspiration comes from her experiences as a Black woman and the ways she’s managed to amplify her voice as a marginalized person. As a recent graduate of the Gallatin School of Individualized Study at New York University, she created a dynamic concentration titled “Storytelling, Content Creation, and Cultural Revolution.” Andrea hopes to inspire the next generation with the power and tools to write their own narratives and reclaim their culture.
