Summary

Flash floods, tsunamis, earthquakes, hurricanes, mudslides, thunderstorms, and wildfires--these devastating events are happening around the world at an alarming rate. As CNN's meteorologist, Bonnie Schneider reports daily on these natural disasters, explaining when they're likely to strike, and telling viewers how to respond when they do. In Extreme Weather, Schneider distills that information into a guide for readers. She interviews experts from a wide variety of agencies--from FEMA to NOAA--to provide a comprehensive understanding of the science behind weather patterns and the latest thinking on how to act in dangerous conditions. Ranging from topics that cover every season and every climate, Schneider introduces the reader to the best course of action during weather emergencies, including: *how to move around in heavy snow *how to handle extreme weather scenarios in your car, outside, or at home *how to predict potential dangers when planning a camping trip or vacation *what you need to have at home to prepare for floods, earthquakes, or severe storms *how to create a family evacuation plan for different emergencies *making sure your beloved pet is taken care of in time of disaster Extreme Weatherprovides details on what to have in emergency safety kits as well as how to make a family disaster plan.

Table of Contents

'This is a book to read on a calm night when there's hardly a breeze and the skies are clear. It will remain with you in vivid detail, and someday, when the weather turns tumultuous, this book could save your life.' - Jeffrey Zaslow, coauthor, The Last Lecture
"Natural disasters and extreme weather are real events that many people don't think about until it's too late. As the nation's official provider of weather forecasts, we rely on meteorologists in the media, like Bonnie, to relay safety measures and severe weather warnings to the public. In this book, Bonnie describes extreme weather and natural disasters and provides specific preparedness tips. The valuable information in this book could save a life!' - Donna Franklin, NOAA's Lightning Safety Program Lead
"As a storm chaser for the last 13 years, I've intercepted over 200 tornadoes and a dozen powerful hurricanes. Witnessing first-hand the destruction and loss of life that can be left in the wake of tornadoes and hurricanes is the overwhelming dark side of storm chasing. Bonnie Schneider's book, Extreme Weather, breaks down the science behind extreme weather events and gives people valuable advice on what to do before, during and after mother nature's most terrifying situations." - Reed Timmer, Meteorologist/Storm Chaser and host of the television show, "Storm Chasers" on the Discovery Channel
"As a news anchor on HLN, everyday I tell viewers about what's happening in the world. Many of those stories describe the devastating role of extreme weather on people's lives. This year, stories about tornadoes in Alabama and Missouri, wildfires in Texas, and even an unusual earthquake near Washington, DC, have been prominent in news coverage. Bonnie Schneider's book Extreme Weather is right on the pulse of what people affected by these natural disasters are most wanting to know- how can I prepare if this happens again? Her advice is easy to follow, and her profiles on weather survivors are compelling to read." - Susan Hendricks, News Anchor, HLN
