Author Biography

About the Authors JILL GOCHER Australian travel photo-journalist Jill Gocher has spent much of her life travelling starting some time ago as a ‘military brat’ when a family posting to Penang began her love affair with Asia. After specialising in Indonesia, for years and writing several books on that country, she now prefers to spend her time in the mountains where the cool air and cooler altitudes allow heightened perceptions on life. She writes for numerous magazines, books and guide books. DES HANNIGAN Des Hannigan was a professional fisherman for fifteen years before taking up what he mistakenly thought might be an easier life as a journalist. He is now a freelance travel writer and photographer and has written over twenty books, including rock climbing guides and walking guides as well as general travel guides to Northern Europe, Greece and Spain. SIMON RICHMOND Simon Richmond's first brush with adventure was on the Big Dipper roller-coaster in his home-town of Blackpool, England. He's been in search of the same adrenalin rush ever since. Now based in Sydney, Australia, he's worked as a journalist in London and Tokyo. His features have been published in many U.K. newspapers, the Sydney Morning Herald, and The Australian. He now spends most of his time travelling and writing guidebooks for the AA, Lonely Planet, and Rough Guides. EMMA STANFORD Emma Stanford was born on a Thursday and still has far to go. Her travels have taken her around the world and she has written books and articles on far-flung adventures from volcano-watching in Hawaii and kit-car rallying in Morocco to horse riding in the Hindu Kush. For this guide she discovers rhinos and river dolphins in Assam. LEE KAREN STOW Lee Karen Stow is a full time travel journalist and photographer, based in Yorkshire, England. A member of the British Guild of Travel Writers, Lee's work has appeared in a number of publications, including The Times; the Sunday Express; In Britain; Wanderlust; Travel Weekly among others. Born with a wandering spirit, Lee travels whenever possible perhaps scuba diving, scrubbing floors, sailing a yacht or teaching English to schoolchildren. HUGH TAYLOR Hugh Taylor, compiler of the A–Z section, is a freelance broadcaster, travel writer, and photographer working regularly for a variety of newspapers and magazines, guidebook publishers and the BBC. He is co-author of AA Essential Scotland, AA Spiral Scotland and part author of the AA Book of Britain's Walks and AA Exploring Britain. STEVE WATKINS Photographer and writer Steve Watkins specializes in covering adventure travel, extreme sports and cultural issues, especially in his favourite destinations—Latin America and Australia. His work has featured in numerous publications, including No Limits World, Traveller, Global Adventure, Wanderlust, Mountain Biking UK, Sunday Express and various BBC publications, and his photographs have been widely exhibited, including at London's Barbican Gallery. Now based in south Wales, he has recently finished writing Adventure Sports Europe (Queensgate Publishing).
