Summary

This study introduces the reader to the life and work of Mohandas Karamchandandhi, often using rare and never-before-seen photography. The photographserive from two main collections, one from the photo-archives of Gandhi'sormer biographer Vithalbhai Jhaveri, and of Kanu Gandhi, Gandhi'sreat-nephew. Jhaveri made it his life's work to collect photographs of M.K.andhi from sources around the world. After Jhaveri's death, Peter Ruheurned the extensive photo collection of over 9000 prints into ahoto-archive of the highest standard through scientific cataloguing andomputerization. Kanu Gandhi lived with M.K. Gandhi for the last 12 years ofis life and was the only person Gandhi gave permission to photograph him,ut with three conditions: that the freedom movement would not fund it, thate was not to use flash and that Gandhi would not pose for him. Thisollection is therefore a precious and intimate view of the more private sidef Gandhi's life.
