Summary

Since 1979 the World Economnic Forum, a foundation based in Geneva, hasproduced annual reports on the relative competitiveness of countries (the term"country" as used in this report covers well-defined, geographicallyself-contained areas that not states but for which statistical data aremaintained on a separate and independent basis), tracing the extraordinarydevelopment of the world economy during the last twenty years. The GlobalCompetitiveness Report uses a research-based Competitiveness Index in whichrankings of relevant economies are given on a multitude of business and economicfactors. From its inception, the Report has furnished specific competitiveinformation on the world's key economies, now peresented with two page profilesfor each economy. These profiles provide: major performance indicotrs; eacheconomy's rank in competitivenss; and highlights of particular strengths andweaknesses. Each year the Report becomes an ever more refined analytical toolfor exploring the exponential expansion of interconnections in our globaleconomy.Data in the Global Competitiveness Report are recent. For instance, the 2000Report includes 1999 data and will remain the best single source anywher onglobal competitiveness until the publication of the next report in mid2001.
