Hans Gunter Flieg emigrated with his family from Chemnitz in Germany to Sao Paulo in Brazil in 1939. Even as a child he was fascinated by photography; he began his photography training with a course in Berlin and continued in his new homeland, later becoming a respected freelance documentary photographer. In addition to their powerful documentary realism, the photographs of Hans Gunter Flieg also display his search for the classic theme. His works are evidence of the progressive changes in Brazil, as it became a modern industrial nation, via portraits, landscapes and architectural images. This catalogue shows the art practice of the photographer and aims to provide an art-historical framework for his work. The illustrated book was published on the occasion of the exhibition Hans Gunter Flieg. Dokumentarfotografie aus Brasilien (1940-1970) 2008, Kunstsammlungen Chemnitz.
