In 1844, ten-year-old Josette travels through the wilderness to Copper Harbor, Michigan with her sister and brother-in-law, an officer in the U.S. Military who has been summoned to help build Fort Wilkins in a remote part of Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Native American culture, military life, dangers of the wilderness all add to the drama of Josette's pioneer life. Josette is rescue from bears by a young Objibwe girl named Maria and the two become fast friends and help to close the gap of suspicion between the soldiers at the Fort and the Native Americans living in the region.
