Each chapter is a compact tribal history of one of the state's Indian nationsOjibwe, Potawatomi, Oneida, Menominee, Mohican and Brothertown, and Ho-Chunkand the book relies on the historical perspectives of Native people. Author Patty Loew focuses on oral traditionstories, songs, the recorded words of Indian treaty negotiators, and interviewsas well as other untapped Native sources, such as tribal newspapers, to present a distinctly different view of history. Elders and tribal historians from each of the twelve Native communities represented in the book participated in the book's developmentmaking suggestions, recommending sources, and offering criticism. Author Biography

Patty Loew is an enrolled member of the Bad River Band of Lake Superior Ojibwe and recipient of the Outstanding Service Award of the Great Lakes Intertribal Council. Formerly a news reporter and anchor for television stations in Canada, Washington, Oregon, and Wisconsin, she is Assistant Professor of Life Sciences Communication at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, co-host of WeekEnd on Wisconsin Public Television, and producer of award-winning documentaries including No Word for Goodbye, Spring of Discontent, Throwaway Future, and Nation Within a Nation
