Summary

First published in 1937, this is a book about India as seen through the eyes of the well-known Turkish writer and novelist, Halide Edib, who visited the region in 1935. It makes a conscious attempt to document significant contemporary events that were shaping the history of India at the time, such as the Gandhian movement and the Hindu-Muslim separatism.

Author Biography

Halide Edib (1884-1964) is among the most acclaimed figures in modern-day Turkey. Extolled by her people as an ideal woman -- one who combined creativity with political activism -- her fame rests in her accomplishments as a writer, a reformist, and a nationalist. A prolific and versatile writer, her enormous output extended over nearly sixty years, and included novels, short stories, criticism, memoirs, translations, and articles on social, educational, and political issues Mushirul Hasan is Professor of History at Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi
