Summary

As the town of Ashland grew, the cultural identity of the town became a major contribution. Jonathan and Emma helped create many changes. They saw stage coaches give way to trains and trolley cars; gas lighting in home and theatre give way to electricity. The bicycle became a sign of change from horse and buggy. It was a period in which the Nichols lived. They were in World War I, when their son Harry went to France; their daughter died in the Influenza epidemic of 1918. The next year 1919 was happier; Harry came back from France, bringing a new wife, Nan.
