Summary

This is a story of the author's self-induced journey into and through hell on his way to finding and remembering a way "home" while stumbling upon the ultimate love which is unconditional in form. While preparing for this journey of remembering, he found himself conscious enough at times to realize and save the "gold nuggets" of spirituality he stumbled upon, hoping one day to share these with others. While the gold nuggets are spiritual in nature, it's a raw variety or a "street spirituality." Being a non-conformist and rebel at heart, he had to find some type of spirituality that would work for him and get him back on the path of remembering what he is here for in the human form. This is a brutally honest (and sometimes graphic) retelling of that journey of recovery.

Author Biography

Nathan Whiting has called central and northern Wisconsin his home for his whole life, but that doesn't mean he hasn't ventured forth to some of the spiritual centers of the world. Nathan has just returned from a spiritual sojourn to Machu Picchu located in Peru, South America. Adding to the list of spiritual adventures are two visits to the Mayan Chichenitza pyramids in the Yucatan region of Mexico and multiple visits to the natural spiritual centers of the western United States including Yosemite, Bear Tooth Pass, and Glacier National Park, along with various adventurous side trips to western ghost town haunts.After cleaning up from drugs and alcohol in May of 1981, he struck out on a spiritual quest to find meaning and purpose to his life. Just being sober and straight was not enough for him; he wanted to keep drinking (spiritually speaking) from the top shelf, just as when he would find himself sitting long-faced in a bar and requesting the best the house had to offer. Early on in recovery he was posed this very question: ôIf you only drank top-shelf in your drinking days, why would you take less than top-shelf in sobriety and recovery?ö Those simple words set him on a quest for an answer to the ultimate question every soul on this planet yearns to know: What am I here for?
