Summary

Sugar Loaf Hill, fifty feet high and 300 yards long, was a key point in the Japanese defensive line on Okinawa in May 1945. On the hill, the Japanese manned a network of sophisticated defenses with grim tenacity, supported by artillery fire from surrounding hills. On the American side, the 6th Marine Division, which attacked the hill in the spring of 1945, may have been the best division in the Corps at the time. As Hallas details in this emotionally compelling account, with extraordinary raw courage and tactical skill, the division's junior officers and enlisted men captured Japanese positions that might have been flanked instead by an amphibious end run. Hallas interviewed Marine participants and pieced together their individual accounts to depict the sustained close-quarter fighting that pushed the Americans to their physical and moral limits as they engaged in a battle that inflicted 2,000 Marine casualties in seven days.
