Nos remontamos a 1907, cuando Manuela, una inocente y analfabeta chica de quince años, empieza a trabajar para la familia más rica de Terreros, un pueblo de Aragón. Para cualquier chica de su condición se trata de una oportunidad única de escapar de trabajos mucho más duros. Al entrar en la Casa Grande intenta pasar desapercibida, pero pronto hará gran amistad con Inés, la hija más joven de la familia, que le enseñará a leer, y se enamorará de Javier, el más alocado de los hermanos.
Empieza a gestarse un amor imposible y trágico por el cual será despedida y se enemistará para siempre con doña Amelia, la madre de la familia. Javier parte a Cuba y Manuela rehace su vida, consiguiendo éxito en sus empresas hasta que, justo antes de empezar la Guerra Civil, descubre algo que le hará recordar su pasado...
