But on Monday night, August 29,2005 the city of New Orleans flooded and by next morning the complex was surrounded by water. Here is the story of how Tulane University Hospital and its parent company, HCA, successfully and safely evacuated at least 1,200 people including dozens of patients in critical condition. It is a story of people pitching in helping one another and of many individual acts of kindness and courage.
