Summary

Primo Levi opened his memoir Survival in Auschwitz with a call to remember, reflect upon, and teach one's children about the Holocaust. The eighth Lessons and Legacies Conference on the Holocaust took up that call, focusing on the transmission of knowledge between generations. This task requires that one look both backward and forward, asking where to locate the roots of the Holocaust and how its repercussions manifest themselves. In this volume, scholars address these questions from historical, cultural, psychiatric, literary, and sociological perspectives. The authors, some of whom are survivors and children of survivors, also consider the personal aspect of associated issues, such as continuity and rupture. The result is a collection that calls us to examine what the generation of the Shoah has passed on to its descendants and what subsequent generations have taken from those legacies. Together these chapters remind us that the Holocaust does-and must-remain present from generation to generation. Book jacket.
