Summary

The Plains Indian Wars of the nineteenth century garnered enduring fame for certain Indian leaders, their names echoing powerfully even today: Sitting Bull, Crazy Horse, Red Cloud. Just as significant but less well known is Taoyateduta, the man whites called "Chief Little Crow." Taoyateduta did not want to lead his people into a war. But, as he told the Dakota warriors gathered around him in August 1862, "Ta-o-ya-te-du-ta is not a coward: he will die with you."
