London was never planned as a major city but is the result of the fusion of a rich tapestry of ancient villages and more modern developments. Many of these villages have been consumed by bustling cosmopolitan areas such as Mayfair and Soho, while others, like Chiswick, Dulwich and Richmond, are more rural and still recognisable today.
