Author Biography

Steve Kokker When he first visited St Petersburg in 1992, Steve was dumb-founded, perplexed - hooked. The place was beautiful, lots of fun. But why did it feel like slipping through the rabbit hole when arriving? He kept returning every summer, eventually moving there for a year in 1997, determined to try and figure out the puzzling society and the contradictions in its inhabitants. Had he read Tyuchev before ('You can't understand Russia with reason...you can only believe in her'), he might have saved himself a lot of trouble. Despite having travelled widely, Steve, whose hometown is Montreal, Canada, has been changed most by the city on the Neva. It gave him the best and worst times of his life and taught him more than he thought possible about humanity and fate. A graduate in psychology and an ex-film critic, Steve also directs video documentaries. He's currently based in Tallinn, Estonia, close enough to Russia to keep stimulated and far enough to keep sane. Nick Selby was born and raised in New York City. In 1990 he moved to Europe and then Russia in 1991, where he wrote The Visitor's Guide to the New St Petersburg. Since then, Nick has been travelling and writing guides for Lonely Planet including Brazil, Germany, Russia, Texas and St Petersburg.
