Author Biography

Allen Freeman Davis was born in Hardwick, Vermont, in 1931, where his parents owned and ran a general store. He lived in the same house, attended the same school building for all twelve grades, and negotiated family life with two sisters and extended family nearby. He graduated from Dartmouth College in 1953 and received a Ph.D. in history from the University of Wisconsin, 1959. Davis spent the bulk of his career as Professor of History at Temple University, Philadelphia. He has published widely and received numerous awards for his scholarship and work in the emerging field of public history.
