Summary

This book moves from the birth of Gandhi's method of nonviolent resistance in South Africa to an in-depth analysis of two of his signal triumphs: the civil disobedience movement of 1930 and his historic Calcutta fast of 1947. Dalton concluded with a comparison of Gandhi to Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X.

Author Biography

Dennis Dalton was the Ann Whitney Olin Professor of Political Science and is now professor emeritus at Barnard College, Columbia University. He is the author of Indian Idea of Freedom: Political Thought of Swami Vivekananda, Aurobindo Ghose, Mahatma Gandhi, and Rabindranath Tagore and editor of Mahatma Gandhi: Selected Political Writings.
