Author Biography

John P. Cooper is an Arabist and maritime archaeologist specializing in the maritime landscapes of the medieval Islamic world, and the boatbuilding traditions of the western Indian Ocean. He graduated in Arabic from Durham University in 1992, and holds Master's degrees in Linguistics and Maritime Archaeology from SOAS and Southampton University respectively. He is currently a research fellow at the Institute of Arab & Islamic Studies of the University of Exeter, where he is investigating contemporary boatbuilding traditions of the southern Red Sea.
