Summary

A selection of writings and speeches by Cardinal William H. Keeler, one of the most influential American Catholic churchmen in recent times in the area of Catholic-Jewish relations.

Author Biography

Memoria Futuri-the term means "remembering for the future"-contains the selected and edited texts and addresses of Cardinal Keeler on Jews and Judaism. The selections range from his first-a short speech given after marching with a sizable demonstration in support of Soviet Jewry-to addresses to major Jewish organizations and international Catholic and Christian-Jewish conferences, and include more academic essays as well. Cardinal William H. Keeler, who served as Archbishop of Baltimore from 1989 to 2007, served for many years with the USCCB. In this capacity he developed a reputation for effectively building interfaith bonds and for furthering Catholic-Jewish dialogue. As Chair of the Bishops' Committee for Ecumenical and Interreligious Affairs (1984-87), he helped arrange the pope's meetings with Jewish leaders in Miami and with Protestant leaders in Columbia, SC, during the 1987 papal visit. In 1994 he was appointed to the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity and to the Congregation for the Oriental Churches, and was named cardinal that same year. Eugene Fisher is Distinguished Professor of Catholic-Jewish Studies at Saint Leo University in Miami. He was for thirty years the director of Catholic-Jewish Relations for the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops and a Consultor to the Vatican for Catholic-Jewish relations.
