Author Biography

Walter Dean Myers says, "There is no more dramatic event in a country's history than the occurrence of a war. We have a tendency to talk about war in larger than life terms - invasions, battle plans, and grand campaigns. But all wars, in my mind, depend ultimately on individual soldiers like Scotty. Talk about 'smart bombs' and 'saturation bombing' tends to let us forget about the families of the soldiers, the dreams, beliefs, and aspirations which personalize the sacrifices endured. It's important to me to write about this intensely personal concept of war. The losses suffered on D-Day and during all of the war should be remembered forever and should always be a restraint when we think about military actions to solve international problems. I can think of no better way to prevent war than to present a true picture of its horrors." Walter Dean Myers is an award-winning writer of fiction, nonfiction, and poetry for young people.
