Summary

This volume, the first in the five-volume series of A New History of the Isle of Man, is intended to provide a contemporary view of the geological history of the island and the evolution of its natural landscape. The geological history of the Isle of Man is immensely long and the rocks and sediments that have accumulated over time tell a fascinating story of drifting continents, changing climates and the evolution of life. All these events have contributed, in one way or another, to the physical landscape seen today, but also to the cultural and economic landscape. The former importance of the mining industry on the island is one manifestation of this; the possibility of valuable hydrocarbon resources under the seas surrounding the island is, for the future, another.

Richard Chiverrell and Geoffrey Thomas are lecturers in the department of geography at the University of Liverpool.
