Summary

"The ocean never sleeps" is another collection of poems or poetic stories as Rosie calls them because they all tell a story. Her favorite poetic story in this book, "This one shows better" tells the story about a couple who are preparing for retirement and are looking to buy a smaller house. They are financially capable of buying an expensive house, but the husband, for an unknown reason can't seem to forget the first and only house they've been shown. The 'ole house at the end of the cul-de-sac; it's in need of much repair and has an old dilapidated wishing well in the front yard.

Excerpts

What color is love? A student with an artist's brush Asked a burning question Of her art teacher, "What color is love?" Without hesitation The teacher Began to paint on the canvas In colors that had Not yet been invented. A yard being mowed Without anyone being told to do it. Giving your best That brings a smile to a friend Who has no lunch money As you share Your bologna sandwich with him. A friend's friend That will be with you until the end. A small child Picking wildflowers From a neighbor's yard And proudly presenting them To his mommy. A love that will sacrifice So that you get the best, Like staying up all night To help you study for a test. Making a scraped knee feel better Just by being there. A voice that tells you, "Be home before dark And no necking in the park." Love didn't scold when I wet the bed But love said "Drink less water instead." A prayer said over me every night, Asking the Almighty To make everything all right. Surprise visits made at school To make sure I don't break any rules. Love takes me to church And Sunday school Helps me to memorize The golden rules. Love says "I love you," as It kisses me good night, Tip-toeing out of my room As It turns out the light. Being given a second chance, After discovering "NO" on the bathroom wall. Feeding the neighbors' kids When their mom wasn't feeling well And calling the police To pull a puppy out of the sewer. You see, Love has no borders It's always in action. Moving, giving, taking, Being compassionate Just as it says in the Good Book; Love is ABOVE ALL. The teacher finished painting Love, Turned to the student and said "Now, what color is your Love?"
